A Land Without Time:  A Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan, (Academy Chicago Publishers, June, 2006, Trade Paper, $17.95, 0-89733-543-0)

Turlock, CA - May 4, 2006 - "San Josean Seized as Spy in African Coup Freed" (San Jose Mercury-News, June , 1978).  "There was a time not so long ago when Afghanistan was just another obscure part of the world; a dusty, lumpy patch of rocky land which kept Pakistan from collapsing into Iran.  When news of my arrest as a spy was reported in the San Jose Mercury-News over twenty years ago, the headline shouted "San Josean Seized as Spy in African Coup Freed."  Today everyone knows Afghanistan is not in Africa, but I am afraid that Afghanistan is becoming less the name of a place and more the name of a war...or of a part of a war," writes John Sumser. the author of A Land Without Time:  A Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan.

While there are currently many books about Afghanistan, no other book offers such a humane, often times humorous, and unique perspective,  For the first time, the story of Afghanistan prior to, and during, the communist coup of 1979 is told from the perspective of an American working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan - learning to adapt to exotic food, mysterious customs and primitive hygiene; and ultimately finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

John Sumser, earned an MA in Philosophy at San Jose State University and an MA and PhD in Sociology at Stony Brook University.  He is a Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Stanislaus.

The author is available for book talks and interviews.  For availability, please contact,
